Under the watchful eyes of the Iwere people, the venerable Orugbo community ceremoniously transferred the sacred responsibility of keeping watch over Aghofen to Oboghoro community as part of the 11th edition of Ghigho Aghofen (palace watch) celebration.

Founded in 1740 by Ijala, Oboghoro community is nestled on the left bank of the Benin River, and stands as a distinguished model of contemporary development in the riverine communities of Warri Kingdom. Oboghoro is revered not only for its royal lineage, but also for its pivotal role centuries ago as a gateway of commerce along the Benin River, where European merchants once found solace on its shores.

While the peoples commitment to selflessness, sacrificial giving, and hospitality has been deeply ingrained through generations, the ceremony yesterday particularly showed their resilience and commitment to the throne as they sang and danced joyfully in the midst of blessed showers of rain as it poured.

As Oboghoro community takes on this hallowed duty, we continue to reaffirm our collective heritage, bound by enduring customs and the values that define us as Itsekiri.
